In the US alone, we generate about 30 million tons of organic waste every year – but only recycle a tiny fraction of that amount. Collecting and composting food scraps diverts them from landfills and incinerators, converting them from “waste” into a productive resource. Businesses and institutions, schools, restaurants, and residents may reduce their waste disposal costs while also producing benefits for their local environment.

GreenCycle accepts and composts food waste at our Indiana facilities, and launched a demonstration project in Ellington, CT in 2009 to expand this service on the East Coast. Many municipalities are adopting food waste composting programs. Forward-thinking communities like Toronto, Seattle, and San Francisco have initiated food waste composting programs. In San Francisco, it is now mandatory for businesses and residents to recycle their food scraps.
